10 Steps for Excellent Time Management as a Business Owner

Do you have way too many things on your plate?

Do you feel like you could be more productive if only there were more hours in the day to work with?

Well, don’t worry! It can be difficult for business owners who are feeling overworked or overwhelmed to take time off, but that’s not the only option when it comes to improving your productivity. We’ll discuss some of the best tips for better managing your time in this article.

How Can You Get More Hours in a Day?

As much as you would like to have more hours in a day, the reality is that there are only 24. So how do we make those hours count?

The answer lies in knowing how to best prioritize your tasks and, believe it or not, knowing how to take care of yourself!

10 Steps for Excellent Time Management as a Business Owner

1. Prioritize your time

As a business owner, you will need to align your time with your goals. The first step to prioritizing your time is to ask yourself what are the top 3-5 most important things to you.

Once your answer this question, then you will be able to properly map out your goals and prioritize your time according to the most important things.

2. Set a timer to track the most important things you do

One of the best things you can do to manage your time better is by setting a timer. This way, you’ll always be aware of how much time has elapsed in your tasks. You also will be better aware of how long it should take you to work on specific tasks.

The Pomodoro technique is a great way to stay focused. You work for 25 minutes then take a 5-minute break. Repeat this about 4-5 times and you’ll have a large amount of time to get things done!

3. Know what time you work best, and do the most important things then

You know yourself better than almost anyone else. You probably already know the time of day you are most productive and energized. Use this time to your best advantage and do your most important work then.

As a business owner, you will need to align your time with your goals.

Doing this will allow you to produce your best work in the most efficient time. You will likely leave your workspace feeling energized from your productive time of work.

4. Be mindful of what you're doing in the moment

When you are aware of what you are doing, you can ask yourself if it is indeed something you should be doing.

Does it align with your goals?

Is it a waste of your time?

Is it helping you to relax in the right ways, or is it mindless?

Often we do things without thinking – even in our downtime – which are mindless and add no value whatsoever. Be sure to think about what you are doing.

5. Delegate tasks if you can afford it

This will give you the time you need to focus on things only you can do for your business! Your time will best be spent when you are focused on doing things that no one else in your company can do. This allows you to have more free time as you are not spending it doing too much on the job.

6. Take care of yourself

An important part of time management for business owners is developing and sticking to good habits that are self-care oriented so as to maintain your well-being in your especially busy life.

You can only pour out your cup to others when your cup is full. It is essential for you to take care of yourself physically and mentally.

You can do this practically by eating well, exercising, getting a good night’s sleep, and taking breaks when needed. In our busy lives, we prioritize what is most important to us. It is important for you to do these things so you can best run your business.

7. Learn to say no to tasks that don't align with your priorities or values

As a business owner with finite time, learning to say no will greatly benefit your business in the long run. By doing so, you will not only have the time you need to complete the things that matter, but you will also be constantly evaluating your priorities and values with each task that comes across your desk.

8. Avoid multitasking

Rather than trying to multiple things at once – at home or at work – focus on one task at a time. This saves time from switching between tasks, allowing you to remain solely focused on one thing. This will make you more productive in the long run.

One way that you can put this into practice right now is by removing everything from your workspace (i.e. desk, table, couch) other than what you need for the task you are currently working on. By doing this, you are more focused on what is in front of you rather than being distracted by multiple things in front of you.

9. Set boundaries

Setting boundaries specifically for how much work you’ll do on weekends and evenings is important so that you have time for other activities like spending time with friends and family, hobbies, or relaxing at home after a long day at work.

Allowing yourself downtime is necessary for your success. Additionally, making time for important people in your life, like your family and friends, is essential for your well-being.

10. Say yes to things that give you energy instead of draining it

Being able to decipher what will give your energy instead of sucking it away is important. Often in our lives, we must do things that drain us. This is good for us in that it challenges us.

With that in mind, you must be aware of your energy levels and making sure that you do things that fill your cup, instead of always draining it. When you feel like it is a struggle to get through the day, figure out what will give you energy instead of drain it away.

Three Ways to Apply this Tomorrow

  • Make lists with all priorities on them so that you’re always working towards something big or small
  • Be sure to get a good night’s rest tonight, eat well, and exercise – even for 10 minutes.
  • Set boundaries for when work hours end and personal hours begin. Make the best time of each of these hours, especially in the small ways like spending time with your family.

Most people are busy and feel like there is never enough time to get everything done.

But, how do you know what the most important things are? If you don’t prioritize your tasks accordingly, it can be difficult to achieve a balanced life as well as meet business goals.

The best way to prioritize (and ultimately have more free time) in both areas of your life is by tracking and taking care of yourself at the same time.
